Friday Finds

Friday Finds is a meme hosted by Mizb at Should be Reading.

So here are my book finds for this Friday 11 June:

i)The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks:

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

A fascinating and moving story of medicine and family, of how life is sustained in laboratories and in memory. Henrietta Lacks was a mother of five in Baltimore, a poor African American migrant from the tobacco farms of Virginia, who died from a cruelly aggressive cancer at the age of 30 in 1951. A sample of her cancerous tissue, taken without her knowledge or consent, as was the custom then, turned out to provide one of the holy grails of mid-century biology: human cells that could survive--even thrive--in the lab. Known as HeLa cells, their stunning potency gave scientists a building block for countless breakthroughs, beginning with the cure for polio. Meanwhile, Henrietta's family continued to live in poverty and frequently poor health, and their discovery decades later of her unknowing contribution--and her cells' strange survival.

ii) Red Hood Road-Ayelet Walman
A dense story of irreparable loss that tracks two families when the bride and groom are killed in a freak car accident hours after their wedding.
Red Hook Road

iii) A Note From an Old Aquaintance:
A thought provoking read. What would you od if an old love from the past re-enters your life? As well as being a love story there is also mystery, action and intrigue thrown in also.

A Note From An Old Acquaintance
Hope you enjoy my finds and perhaps add them to your Wishlist!

Hi Mary

Oooh! You're really wetting my appetite now!
It doesn't come out in the UK for a while so I have to grit my teeth and wait!
Thank you for popping by.

I've been eying the Henrietta Laks book for a long time, especially since it is set partly in Baltimore (I live near there).

Thanks for dropping my by blog! I'll be checking out more of your posts later today. :)

Vanessa, thanks for visiting my blog! You asked about my header photo. It is in the US state of Maine where my family vacationed for many years. I took the pic one evening after dinner and it's one of my favorites. I wish I could post the entire photo as it's quite amazing but the wordpress template I use made me crop it. Thanks for your kind words :)

I heard about Henrietta's story on the news a few month ago. Things have changed since the 50's.

"A Note From..." sounds like a fun read. I will have to see if my library has it.

Thanks for taking the time out of your busy day to visit My Reading Corner. It is always nice to talk to someone from another area of this small world, and see that you are reading many of the same books we enjoy here in the USA.

I hope you have a splendid week-end.
