These are simply my thoughts and "ramblings" as they come to me during my daily life; nothing more, and of course, my love of books, books.....and more books!Vanessahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10163734024113471387noreply@blogger.comBlogger50125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8279759946969783076.post-85123597306463553422010-06-18T04:05:00.000-07:002010-06-18T04:05:01.844-07:00Friday Finds

<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "Century Gothic"; font-size: 11pt;"> 15th July 1988 Emma and Dexter meet on the night of their graduation. Tomorrow they must go their separate ways. So where will they be on this one day next year? And the year after that? And every year that follows?
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "Century Gothic"; font-size: 11pt;">I loved this book and kept thinking about Emma and Dexter long after the last page. You are left with the hallucinatory feeling that they’ve become as well know to you as your closest friends. Quite an intoxicating read.
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "Century Gothic"; font-size: 11pt;">I love stories of people re-inventing themselves, following their passion (usually against the odds) , and moreso in the second phase of their life.
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "Century Gothic"; font-size: 11pt;">Altho’ I am from the UK, I live in Spain where the mentality is that your life is over once you hit 40! Employers don’t give you a second glance if you are over 40, and the Spanish government has said that if you are 40 and unemployed, you might as well consider yourself retired from hereonin!!! How ridiculous is that? I find it infuriating and plan to give this book to all my Spanish friends (who read English!). Can’t wait to read this book.

At the age of 97 years and 4 months, Shigeaki Hinohara is one of the world's longest-serving physicians and educators. Hinohara's magic touch is legendary: Since 1941 he has been healing patients at St. Luke's International Hospital in Tokyo and teaching at St. Luke's College of Nursing. After World War II, he envisioned a world-class hospital and college springing from the ruins of Tokyo; thanks to his pioneering spirit and business savvy, the doctor turned these institutions into the nation's top medical facility and nursing school. Today he serves as chairman of the board of trustees at both organizations. Always willing to try new things, he has published around 150 books since his 75th birthday, including one "Living Long, Living Good" that has sold more than 1.2 million copies. As the founder of the New Elderly Movement, Hinohara encourages others to live a long and happy life, a quest in which no role model is better than the doctor himself.

It encourages us to make big art, not small scribbles. It says to try to draw a circle so huge that there is no way we can finish it while we are alive. All we see is an arch; the rest is beyond our vision but it is there in the distance.

Pain is mysterious, and having fun is the best way to forget it. If a child has a toothache, and you start playing a game together, he or she immediately forgets the pain. Most people thought I was crazy to prepare for a catastrophe, but on March 20, 1995, I was unfortunately proven right when members of the Aum Shinrikyu religious cult launched a terrorist attack in the Tokyo subway. We accepted 740 victims and in two hours figured out that it was sarin gas that had hit them. Sadly we lost one person, but we saved 739 lives.

Science alone can't cure or help people. Science lumps us all together, but illness is individual. It was a beautiful sunny morning, and as Mount Fuji came into sight, the plane was hijacked by the Japanese Communist League-Red Army Faction. I spent the next four days handcuffed to my seat in 40-degree heat. As a doctor, I looked at it all as an experiment and was amazed at how the body slowed down in a crisis.

Find a role model and aim to achieve even more than they could ever do. My father went to the United States in 1900 to study at Duke University in North Carolina.

A fascinating and moving story of medicine and family, of how life is sustained in laboratories and in memory. Henrietta Lacks was a mother of five in Baltimore, a poor African American migrant from the tobacco farms of Virginia, who died from a cruelly aggressive cancer at the age of 30 in 1951. A sample of her cancerous tissue, taken without her knowledge or consent, as was the custom then, turned out to provide one of the holy grails of mid-century biology: human cells that could survive--even thrive--in the lab. Known as HeLa cells, their stunning potency gave scientists a building block for countless breakthroughs, beginning with the cure for polio. Meanwhile, Henrietta's family continued to live in poverty and frequently poor health, and their discovery decades later of her unknowing contribution--and her cells' strange survival.

(Extract from Amazon Editorial Review)

I am currently reading a fascinating book above (compiled by one of my favourite authors Jack Canfield) where 55 "well-known" people tell the story of the book that changed their life.
I then started thinking about the books that changed my life. I'm not sure if these books changed my life, but they certainly made an impact.

They were:

These are the books that really got me hooked on reading when I was a young girl. I remember my mum shouting for me every morning as I was late for school because I was engrossed in my Famous Five adventure!

Later, I think the non-fiction books that had a huge impact on me were:
i)

ii)

Both of these non-fiction books really changed my thinking.

And in the fiction category:

i) a book about the holocaust and it's impact on later generations of the same family

and

ii) a side to illegal immigration we never think about.A book that left me thinking about it days after I finished it.

I am sure there are many more books that really had an impact on me, but these are the ones that spring to mind .

What books had a lasting impact on you? I would love to hear.

<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "Bookman Old Style"; font-size: 11pt;">I have been dreaming of, and planning a new project which I’ve had in mind for some years now. Finally the time has arrived to start putting the ideas into action. However, now the time has arrived of the actual “doing” part of the project, I have lost a little of my “mo-jo”. I’ve been so enthusiastic about this project for a few years now, but now that it is all systems go, I seem to be debilitated into non-action.

<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "Bookman Old Style"; font-size: 11pt;">Why?

<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "Bookman Old Style"; font-size: 11pt;">I think it’s the fear of making the wrong decision. While the idea is a pipe-dream, it’s OK to fantasize. But once you start putting the pieces together we suddenly fear that the decisions we are making are not the “perfect” ones. The fear of making the wrong choices can be completely debilitating (as I am finding out!).

<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "Bookman Old Style"; font-size: 11pt;">Having to do everything perfectly is paralyzing. If we have to know without a doubt that the decisions we are making are the perfect ones, we risk never making any choices at all. We have to remember it’s OK to make mistakes. Mistakes are messengers, letting us know when we are getting closer and when we are moving further away from our destination. They are powerful guides. But the key is NOT to dwell on our mistakes. We become what we think about, so we need to choose to focus instead on all the things that are going correctly; all the things we are doing proactively, and positively moves towards our objectives.

<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "Bookman Old Style"; font-size: 11pt;">I would love to hear your thoughts. Do you find it difficult to make decisions, or do you jump in with both feet fearless?

<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "Bookman Old Style"; font-size: 11pt;">Please leave a comment with your thoughts.

.....................many things to many different people.

Here are some of my favourite tips and simple pleasures that always brighten up my world.

Tip1: Become and optimist.
Optimists are happier and more successful. In the face of set-backs they see the future as full of possibility. How? Imagine your best possible self 10 years from now. What are you doing? How are you feeling? Reflecting on dreams can help you think positively.

Tip 2: Focus on what’s going right.
This is a “biggie” and one of the principles of the law of attraction.Ever wondered why the law of attraction isn’t working for you? I’m sure you will find the principle reason is you are focusing on all that isn’t working and not what is going right. In tests 92% of depressed people who listed every day three things that went well, became happier with their symptoms halved in 15 days.

Tip 3: Try meditation.
Buddhist Matthieu Ricard is one of the world’s happiest people. He has spent much of the past 35 years meditating. Studies have shown that meditation causes huge activity in the brain area associated with happiness. A few hours of meditation can kick-start this process.

Tip 4: Perform Random Acts of Kindness.
According to various research happy people are more likely to volunteer, and the more they do, the happier they are. Acts of kindness are an easy way in; they give you perspective and counter feelings of alienation.

Here are some things that create those warm, fuzzy feelings of happiness within me (aside from the obvious of family and friends).

Films:
Grease
Little Miss Sunshine
Hairspray

TV:
Glee
Friends

Sights:
My luggage coming out first on the conveyor belt at the airport
The postman arriving with lots of packages

Guilty pleasures:
Ben and Jerry's ice-cream
Cashmere socks for slouching around in the house
New books
Homemade soup on a really cold day

Songs:
Lovely Day-Bill Withers
Dancing Queen- Abba
Don’t Stop me Now- Queen
Club Tropicana- Wham

Please leave a comment and let me know what makes you happy.

It says " If we wait for the moment when everything, absolutely everything is ready, we shall never begin"- (Ivan Turgenev)

How true is that?
Why are you waiting to be healthy, waiting to change careers, waiting to be happy, waiting to start a new business, waiting to clear up the relationships that are not working, waiting to fall in love etc etc?

We wait for out holiday (or the weekend to finish) before we start our diet, we wait for interest rates to go down, we wait because we think our friends/partners bad behaviour will change, we wait for the economy to get better. We are constantly waiting for something. And whilst we are "busy" waiting, life is moving ever faster.

Sometimes waiting is just an excuse to not do something. I have a number of clients who list a multitude of reasons as to why they can't start their action plan, and it's usually because they are "waiting" for something. But after some digging and delving, we soon uncover that what they are waiting for is irrelevant; it really won't stop them beginning their change NOW! It's a cover to hide behind to avoid taking action.

What are you waiting for? Is it genuine or just a ruse to delay action?

Please leave your comments and share your thoughts.
Over at Should be Reading, MizB hosts WWW… WEDNESDAYS and asks readers to just answer the following 3 questions:

What are you currently reading?

What did you recently finish reading?

What do you think you’ll read next?

As an avid reader I follow a lot of blogs and came across this wonderful thread posted by MizB
OK, here are my answers:

1)Currently reading:
I am currently reading
This was recommended on another blog (can't remember which now), but really enjoying it.
I always feel I should read a business book. I feel terribly guilty if I read a novel during the day.

And finally, re-reading
This book is hauntingly beautiful and will stay with you long after you turn the final page. I couldn't stop thinking about it weeks after I finished it.And it still brings tears to my eyes now.

What I have found recently talking to many of the clients I have is their loyalty to a company seems to fall into distinct categories, and none of these categories are related to money!! How’s that for a shocking statement?

Talking to my clients, several themes seem to emerge:

Professional Development:
Employees who are given the opportunity to learn more skills and increase their skills set are much more likely to stick around. It seems to be the most important reason clients have given for staying with an organisation.

Coaching and Feedback:
Even top performers need to know how well (or not) they are doing, what’s working and what needs improvement. Smart managers understand that every employee wants to feel their contributions are being appreciated, and once this fails to happen employees start heading for the door (even surprisingly in this economic climate)

Positive work environment:
As we spend nearly 70% of our lives at work, this really is a biggie!
Whether you are on a factory floor, or have the much coveted “corner office”, ones environment and co-workers influence a big chunk of job satisfaction. It seems that apart from the work flowing, a little fun every now and then; birthday celebrations and the like, do a lot to keep morale up.

Good bosses:
Ooooh, this is a really subjective issue. But the fact is people don’t really leave their work, they leave their bosses (well I know I have in the past!). You just have to consider what happens when a popular boss leaves an organisation, there usually follows a mini-exodus. Even people who are happy with their job resign to follow their leader (irrespective of the money on offer).

So to close both this post and the previous post (which are connected), if you take a job merely for the salary, I’m willing to bet your job satisfaction will be on the lower end of the scale, and your frustration will be off the chart. But if it’s a job you love, chances are the rewards will follow.

Since this recent world recession I have been inundated with clients who want to change direction, have been made redundant and see this as an opportunity to follow their passion, or those who are just being squeezed so tightly in their current positions that they know they have to jump ship sooner or later.

One thing I have noticed with all my clients is that those who didn’t have control over their destiny and unfortunately lost their jobs are actually really eager to get back to work. They are desperate to prove their worth.

There are other clients who are secure “at the moment”, but are looking to move. They are grateful to be employed but are really keen to find new challenges or to use their abilities elsewhere. These clients keep plugging away until something comes along; they have their antennae up ALL the time!

But one common theme I have noticed with all my recent clients is that it’s not just about the money.

Naturally we all work to pay our bills and hopefully have a little left over to play with. However, this recession has made many re-evaluate their requirements in taking a new job, and perhaps number one on the list is job satisfaction. At a time when people can’t be as picky as they might like to be, doing what you love and what you are good at still seems to trump a bigger paycheck. How surprising is that?

This theme along with what breeds loyalty to a company will be in my next posting-stay tuned!!!

Don’t undermine your worth by comparing yourself to others. It is because we are different that each of us is special.

Don’t set your goals by what other people deem important. Only you know what is best for you.

Don’t take for granted the things closest to your heart. Cling to them as you would your life, for without them, life is meaningless.

Don’t let life slip through your fingers by living in the past or for the future. By living your life one day at a time, you live all the days of your life.

Don’t give up when you still have something to give. Nothing is really over until the moment you stop trying.

Don’t be afraid to admit that you are less than perfect. It is this fragile thread that binds us to each other.

Don’t be afraid to encounter risks. It is by taking chances that we learn to be brave.

Don’t shut love out of your life by saying it is impossible to find. The quickest way to receive love is to give love. The fastest way to lose love is to hold it too tightly;and the best way to keep love is to give it wings.

Don’t dismiss your dreams. To be without dreams is to be without hope; to be without hope is to be without purpose.

Don’t run through life so fast that you forget not only where you’ve been, but also where you are going. Life is not a race, but a journey to be savoured each step of the way.

Oh my!!!! If only this really worked. It does work at first, but in the long run, trust me, it really doesn’t. When you initially start questioning your career, it’s easy to push aside the random thoughts and pretending they don’t really exist. You know what I mean, the “what if’s” and the long list of regrets. Over time these random thoughts become real nagging thoughts. You start to find yourself day-dreaming about your options. You start building a list of reasons to ignore your growing dissatisfaction i.e “I’m too old”, “I don’t want to take a pay cut”, “I don’t want to return to study” etc etc etc.

With clients who are going through the same thing I work on identifying and confronting the fears; finding out whether the fear is real or just an excuse not to do anything and stay in ones comfort zone. Sometimes the fear of change remains but with a different intensity and there grows a greater commitment to living the life the client really wants to live, than to feeling the fear.

So this is the last of my career myths post. I hope if you are at a cross-roads in your career at this moment, you would have found a myth you might have been hanging onto, that you now realise is not enabling you. Now you know that it is really just a myth, what are you waiting for? Go for it and make the change!

This is one of the most frequent questions asked by clients when considering a career change or a career move. It seems like a logical analysis, but don’t be fooled.
Do not ask yourself this question! It rarely leads you to the job or answers you are seeking. It will lead you to feeling overwhelmed with options, or feeling like you have to choose what’s practical over what seems to be impractical.

The question that will lead you to answers is simple (but not necessarily easy!) It is , “What do I really want to do?” This is a very different question to “what’s best?”

One way to tell if you are in the right career is whether or not you like your job. Now I know we ALL have bad days when we are stressed and we hate everybody and everything around us. I am not talking about those isolated days. I am talking about a constant feeling of dissatisfaction. This feeling is usually a sign that you need to re-examine your whole career choice. This is something I frequently hear from coaching clients who have decided to work with me. They know something isn’t right because they don’t like their jobs. In fact they usually hate their jobs. Their natural assumption is that their unhappiness is a consequence of a larger underlying issue...........their choice of career.

This is a clear case of false logic. Not liking your job might be telling you you’re in the wrong job. It doesn’t necessarily mean you are in the wrong career. Let's not forget they are two different things. You could just be working for the wrong person or the wrong company. It really takes a skillful approach to discern the source of your discontent, and it usually is very hard to do without the help of someone independent (sorry for the shameless plug for all Career Coaches)
Another career myth for you; a further myth that stops people living the life they really want to live.

Sometimes having a back-up plan is a smart and prudent course of action. They seem smart and grown-up and responsible. But what happens when you’re standing with one foot in and one foot out? In my experience, we usually close the door and retreat. We become reluctant to commit ourselves and then we end up denying ourselves what we really want. Even worst we end up with feelings of regret and those damn nagging questions of “what if?”. (These questions really kill me and I avoid them at all cost).

I think back-up plans diffuse our energy, and diffused energy diffuses results. Give all that you’ve got to your passion, your dream, your risk
and you’ve got a better chance of being successful.

Vanessahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10163734024113471387noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8279759946969783076.post-91372563923140166972010-02-13T01:46:00.000-08:002010-02-16T02:04:50.632-08:00Career Myth 2 - changing careers is risky!<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 105px; height: 132px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfUYPy77I_9k4B8OlpIbadm0cvK_OPMiAHr6lrSuf6Ez8ds2g_5mnwAoKh3CG3c7wjc-o2IFHzTW48CsFf2b4nIPtGDCjkCPPAHY_zV3E6qdrTrsmO7DRD0c5EJ2cZc75hkMXTPhBVJbn7/s400/tightrope2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5437667350359873922" />

What’s riskier than leaving what you know to pursue the unknown? Changing careers means leaving behind a piece of your identity-your “I’m a lawyer” response to the dinner-party question, “what do you do?” It might also means admiting to yourself that you made a mistake with an initial career choice. Or it might mean acknowledging that you’re unsure of what’s next, and lets face it, smart people are always supposed to know what’s next, right?
Absolutely not!!!!
Successful career changers often don’t know or have a plan. Sometimes waiting until you actually have a plan can be riskier than just “sucking and see”.

I love this quote from Kathy Cordova’s books ‘Let Go, Let Miracles Happen’- “If you want to make God laugh, make a plan......”

Nothing, absolutely nothing is riskier than not changing careers if you’re longing to do so. Here’s why: The longing just will not go away no matter how hard you try and push it to the back of your mind. It will always be there, bubbling away under the surface, waiting for you to do something about it. And there is nothing worse than the thought years later of “I wonder if...........”

Vanessahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10163734024113471387noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8279759946969783076.post-19512217548026003602009-09-08T10:55:00.000-07:002010-02-16T02:04:09.345-08:00Career myths you need to bust!!!!<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 104px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQSMXAkPdOF3qEm17OmwosWt_kjOFFpp1JpB-TiqnIEKuyiEHyddjrgM-bpVvhAL8xOlof9QgEFuaAUOuczvXtYmK1xxzzEhvzRubO2A_Wlr1QXm50ZI58pFEtkYL4xgqZde08LIlpoc1L/s400/cliff-diving.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5379158090667055554" />

There are usually two times during the year when we re-evaluate our careers/jobs. It’s usually just after our summer holidays when we return to the routine of work and bosses we hate, coupled with the summer blues. And, in the New Year when for the umpteenth time we say we are going to take a risk and follow our passion. I know that I made some of my biggest career decisions during these two periods during the year. To this day I can remember clearly when I made the decision to move to Spain. It was after a fabulous holiday in Spain, I was on the plane home to the UK feeling so sad to be leaving beautiful blue skies, wonderful food, a relaxed and safe way of life, and the kind of lifestyle I was just getting used to. It was early September, and as we touched down at Heathrow ariport in the early afternoon, the sky was black. The pilot advised us there were storms on the way, the traffic out of the airport car-park was grid-locked, the car-parking fee was exorbitant and the journey home took 2.5 hours instead of the usual 1.5 hours (because of road-works everywhere despite it being a Sunday!) I just remember saying to my husband, “Why are we doing this? Who says we have to live in the UK?” And so began our first foray into chasing our happiness and not our pensions.

Over the next few weeks, I am going to give you some career beliefs that need to busted once and for all as a way of helping you “chase your passion and not your pension!”

Career Myth 1: It’s a tough job/economy at the moment, so now is not the time to make changes.

Despite the newspapers and TV news constantly telling us that unemployment is at it’s highest and job grwoth is at a standstill, or that we will experience a slow economic recovery, not to mention down-sizing and outsourcing, don’t believe it.
It’s a myth because it doesn’t reflect the whole story. The fact is it is a different job market today. How we transition from job to job is different. Hiring practises have changed but NOT stopped. What makes it tougher is that we’ve been slower to change. We’ve held on to old practises and old behaviours. For example methods of networking have changed considerably in the last few years. It’s nearly all done on-line. That’s not to say the old ways don’t work anymore. They are just not as effective anymore. Despite being told we are in a recession you just have to glance at some of the top job sites on-line and you will see there are new jobs, in every sector, for just about every country and for every salary range, listed every day. I have also worked with countless clients that have made the jump and changed careers, gone back to University or started new businesses (and are exceedingly well) all during the recession we are living in at the moment. The problem is news programmes and newspapers thrive on instilling fear. My first piece advice is go on a “news/media” diet for a week, and just see how differently you will feel. Once you stop absorbing all the negative news that we are bombarded with, then you will start to feel in a better place to start making decisions. Let me tell you, I have not watched the news for over 1.5 years. It is banned in my house, and my husband and I are always being asked how we are always so positive and happy. I put it down to our “news diet”.

Vanessahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10163734024113471387noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8279759946969783076.post-78755230964239392422009-08-03T09:47:00.000-07:002009-08-03T10:06:51.989-07:00Live and Love Life!!!<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 124px; height: 93px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPK045xYgsdv0ZwMqVVoxYh264u7Md-qOz15058DnrghFHMBHtaKcx6Jk1O9KEBOYfHuhmn93ZBWj2V7MIodzWQNFX5wRuJVt4W3h8HP2CTR8dPLjVdXh2ZwOvJubq5kJQ1uUVTTcDyjU-/s400/English+afternoon.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5365785105470418514" />

Many of you have been e.mailing me asking where I am.

I didn't realise it has been 2 months since I last posted; my sincere apologies to my followers.

What excuse can I give? I don't have one actually. I've just been enjoying the summer here in Spain. The heat does become unbearable at times, but I try and refrain from complaining, especially as I originate from rainy London! I have to be very careful when I speak to friends in the UK, as just mentioning how unbearably hot it is can be met with shouts of " you are so ungrateful", "you don't know how lucky you are", "it hasn't stopped raining here" (as my friend in Ireland said last night on the phone) ........etc etc

While thinking about what to write today, I suddenly noticed a wonderful poem/piece of writing that I have had stuck on my fridge for years. I don't know where I got it or even who wrote it, but I think it is a wonderful reminder of how life should be.

Here it is:

As we grow up, we learn that even the one person
that wasn’t supposed to ever let you down, probably will.

You will have your heart broken probably more than once,
and it’s harder every time.

You’ll break hearts too,
so remember how it felt when yours was broken.

You’ll fight with your best friend.

You’ll blame a new love for things an old one did.

You’ll cry because time is passing too fast,
and you’ll eventually lose someone you love.

So take too many pictures, laugh too much,
and love like you’ve never been hurt,
because every sixty seconds you spend upset
is a minute of happiness you will never get back.

Don’t be afraid that your life will end,
Be afraid that it will never begin!!!

Vanessahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10163734024113471387noreply@blogger.com0
